The Fibroid Diet: Managing Symptoms Through Food

Posted on June 13, 2025

Living with fibroids can mean dealing with regular pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, and fatigue. But small dietary changes can help ease the burden.

If you struggle with uterine fibroids, choosing the right foods may help ease your symptoms.

Following a fibroid-friendly diet may help balance hormones, slow fibroid growth, and ease symptoms. In this post, we share what to eat (and avoid) for relief.

Understanding Fibroids

Fibroids are benign tumors that develop in the uterine cavity, within its muscular walls, or externally, attached to the organ via stalk-like growths. While these tumors are not typically dangerous, fibroid symptoms can be disruptive.

Severe symptoms like excessive menstrual bleeding can lead to iron-deficiency anemia, causing fatigue, weakness, and diminished quality of life that requires both dietary intervention and medical management.

The Role of Diet in Fibroid Management

While we don’t know exactly what causes fibroids, we know they are influenced by hormone fluctuations. Estrogen, in particular, plays a key role in their development.

When you gain weight and your body creates more fat cells, your estrogen levels tend to rise. As such, controlling your weight through a healthy diet could help manage fibroids.

Low levels of Vitamin D have also been linked to increased fibroid risk. Adding more nutrient-rich foods to your diet can help reduce your risk.

Foods to Eat With Fibroids

Research shows that a poor diet can contribute to fibroid development, while a diet rich in the following foods can help protect your body from the damaging effects of these tumors:

  • Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
Fill your plate with nutrient- and fiber-rich foods
    such as:
    • Carrots and sweet potatoes (these also help support fertility)
    • Oranges and apples
    • Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries
    • Broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower
    • Leafy greens like kale and spinach
  • Whole Grains
Whole grains like oats, quinoa, and brown rice are great additions to a fibroid diet because they’re packed with fiber to help balance your hormones and detoxify your body
  • Healthy Fats
Source these fats from fish, nuts, seeds, and olive oil.
  • Green Tea
Early studies show that EGCG, a compound found in green tea, can disrupt cell growth in fibroid tumors, suggesting this compound may help treat fibroids in the future.

Foods to Avoid with Fibroids

These foods should be reduced or eliminated from your fibroid diet because they can promote fibroid growth by contributing to hormonal imbalances, inflammation, and oxidative stress:

  • Red Meat
This dietary staple is packed with hormones, which can contribute to rising estrogen levels in your body.
  • Alcohol Consumption
Research shows that drinking alcohol triggers inflammation in the body. Over time, this can increase the production of prostaglandins, which can promote fibroid growth. Alcohol can also increase estrogen production, further increasing your risk for tumor growth.
  • Processed Foods
While flavorful, these foods are packed with refined sugars, corn syrup, and other additives that promote insulin resistance, weight gain, and hormonal imbalances.

Natural Remedies for Fibroids

While some herbs and supplements are marketed as natural fibroid treatments, many lack evidence and could be ineffective or even harmful.  It’s important to talk to your healthcare provider before adding any to your diet.

That said, certain foods and nutrients may help relieve fibroid symptoms while supporting your overall health.

Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Lowering inflammation through your diet may help ease fibroid-related symptoms like pelvic pain. Foods that fight inflammation include tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries, cherries, almonds, walnuts, spinach, kale, and collard greens.

Fatty fish and olive oil also provide anti-inflammatory benefits.

Vitamin D and Fibroids

Low vitamin C levels have been linked to fibroid growth.  While supplements can help, you can also boost your intake through foods like raw mushrooms, salmon, rainbow trout, tilapia, flounder, skim milk, and low-fat yogurt. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting supplements or making major dietary changes and consider having your vitamin D levels tested to guide your plan.

Developing a Fibroid Diet Plan

Creating and following a fibroid diet can help you find natural relief, especially when tumors are small and symptoms are mild. It can help you take control of your health, reducing some of the stress and uncertainty around your fibroid diagnosis.

In addition to eating more fibroid-friendly foods, consider the following dietary approaches.

Mediterranean Diet Approach

For some women, following a Mediterranean diet is a simple and sustainable way to support fibroid health. This eating style emphasizes fruits, vegetables, fish, and legumes, all of which are fibroid-friendly.

Moreover, this approach limits red meats and other foods that may worsen symptoms. Because it’s a popular diet, it’s easy to find recipes, meal plans, and shopping lists to help you stay on track without added stress.

Balancing Hormones Through Diet

What you eat can influence your hormone levels, for better or worse. Certain foods may support hormonal balance, while others can contribute to imbalances and fibroid growth.  A well-planned fibroid diet may help regulate hormones naturally, potentially easing symptoms and slowing or stopping tumor growth and development.

When to Seek Medical Care for Fibroids

Women with large or multiple fibroids may not find relief from dietary changes alone. When symptoms are severe and disrupt your daily life, you may want to consider medical intervention for fibroids.

However, before seeking surgery, we encourage you to complete these UFE screening questions to see if you’re a candidate for uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), a minimally invasive fibroid treatment.
