Choosing Less Invasive Treatment of Uterine Fibroids: Myomectomy vs UFE

As alternatives to hysterectomy, UFE is a minimally invasive treatment that shrinks fibroids by blocking the tumors' blood supply. And myomectomy is a surgery to remove individual tumors, making it more invasive and giving this procedure a higher risk for complications, according to recent research. However, some women may feel more comfortable choosing myomectomy instead of UFE if they want to explore pregnancy after fibroid treatment.

What's the Data on Myomectomy vs UFE Sucess Rates?

According to the 7 year FEMME study following 950 women who were split between myomectomy and UFE for the treatment of uterine fibroids, both groups of women experienced equally effective relief for fibroids symptoms such as heavy bleeding. Women who chose myomectomy needed more follow up procedures than women who selected UFE. And, their were post-procedural complications in 2.9% of the myomectomy patients, compared to problems for just 1.1% of women who chose UFE. At the conclusion of the study, author Dr. Jemianne Bautista-Jia thus concluded, "The two treatments were comparably effective [and] UFE resulted in more favorable outcomes."

Clearly, there are highly effective, less invasive, treatment options for uterine fibroids, so you should take your time and carefully consider all your options before committing to one procedure.
